Abstract

The purposes of this study were to identify and compare patients¢¥ and nurses¢¥ perception level of stressors due to hospitalization.
The subjects consisted of 101 patients who had been hospitalized from three to seven days in a general medical surgical department and 107 nurses who had been working on the medical and surgical wards. Samples were drawn from three general hospitals with the capacity of more than 300 beds in Seoul.
The instrument developed by the researcher consisted of 50 items, each with five points in rating scale.
In factor analysis by use of PAI Matrix, the patients¢¥ stressors were classified into 11 factors and the cummulative percentage of these factors was 65.9%. For the test of internal consistency, Cronbach¢¥s alpha showed .96.
The results of the study were as follows:
1. The patients¢¥ perception level of stressors due to hospitalization ranged from the score of 75 to 171, showing mean of 121.287 and standard error of 2.167.
In analyzing the relationship between the perception level of stressors and sociodemographic variables, the difference was statistically significant only for economic status (F=4.190, p(.05), showing the highest perception level of stressors in "low" economic group.
2. The level of nurses¢¥ perception for patients¢¥ stressors due to hospitalization ranged from the score of 119 to 229, showing mean of 176,868, and standard error of 2.080.
The nurses with B.S. degree showed higher perception level for patients¢¥: stressors than those with 3 year collegiate program graduates (F=7.272, p<01), while nurse- working on medical floors showed higher perception level for patients¢¥ stressors than those working on surgical floors (F=11.502, pC 005).
3. In the comparison of the perception level of stress between patients and nurses, nurses showed higher perception level than of patients.
4. Among stressors classified according to adaptive modes, perception level of stressors was highest in role function among other modes for both the nurses and the patients.
On the basis of the above findings, further study was suggested using extensive samples and different situations. For better nursing assessment ant intervention,- suggestion is made that reinforcement and redirection of nurses attention to the patients¢¥ perception level of stressors due to hospitalization be incorporated into basis nursing curriculum and in-service education.
